Ben Stokes pays tribute to his father Ged, who has died aged 65

Durham and England cricket star Ben Stokes paid tribute to his father Ged who died on Tuesday.

Ben's father Ged Stokes died aged 65 in Christchurch, New Zealand after a battle with brain cancer.

In a short post on Instagram, Ben Stokes published a photo of Ged and wrote : "In different places now me and you Ged, but knowing you’ll always have this smile on your face makes me smile every time I think of you.”

The 29-year-old Durham all-rounder was with the England side in South Africa before their tour was aborted.

Ged Stokes played international rugby league for New Zealand and also coached in Cumbria with Workington and Whitehaven, both of whom issued fulsome tributes.

Ben Stokes missed the majority of England’s summer Test series against Pakistan to be with his father in Christchurch after it was announced in August that he was suffering from the disease.

Ged's former club Workington Town said in a statement: "It is with great sadness that we learn our former player and coach Ged Stokes has passed away.

"Ged is written into the rich fabric of Town history and will be greatly missed.

"Our thoughts are with Deb, Ben and James.

"Ged still has many, many friends here in West Cumbria and we send our thoughts to them too."

Ben Stokes' club, Durham County Cricket Club, also paid tribute.

It said: "Durham Cricket would like to send our thoughts to Ben Stokes & family following the sad news of the passing of his father Ged Stokes."
