Ben Stokes' helmet smashes into pieces during Ashes test versus Australia at Headingley

Ben Stokes was rattled on the helmet as he and England captain Joe Root looked to tire out Australia's bowlers on the fourth morning of the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

The English pair resumed on 156 for three and continued the guarded approach they had adopted last night in their pursuit of a record fourth-innings chase of 359.

Having largely pitched the ball fuller in the first few overs of Sunday, Josh Hazlewood changed tack and a lifter saw Durham CCC star Stokes clattered on the grille, prompting the dislodging of his stem guards, which fortunately missed the stumps.

Stokes was able to resume an attritional innings, which at the time of being hit had encompassed 61 balls for only two runs.

There were four successive maidens before Root got the first run of the morning with a tickle off the back foot from the 26th delivery of the morning.
