Ben Stokes faces scan on shoulder ahead of England's fifth Ashes Test vs Australia

Ben Stokes is set to miss England's training session at the Oval on Tuesday to go for a scan on his right shoulder that will rule him out of bowling this week.

Stokes left the field midway through his 11th over in Australia's first innings at Old Trafford after complaining of soreness in the joint.

And as a result he is most likely to play in the final Test of the summer as a specialist batsman after England named an unchanged squad in their bid to draw the series.

At 2-1 the Ashes might have gone, but there remains some pride to be salvaged at the Oval by a side who have spent the entire series playing catch up.

And both Sam Curran and Chris Woakes could find themselves recalled to the final eleven as England shuffle their pack one last time, most probably at Jason Roy and Craig Overton's expense.

With Stokes playing as a batsman, Curran can replace Roy and take up the all rounder role, while Woakes and Overton would be a direct swap, despite some final day battling by the Somerset man at Old Trafford.

Captain Joe Root is under increasing pressure to prove his credentials as a leader following such a dismal showing in Manchester where he found it hard to get the best out of his players.

Without Stokes to turn to for a pick-me-up in the field like he delivered in Leeds, Root must get more out of his side for one last push for the summer.

Ashes winning captain Michael Vaughan: “The captain has to take responsibility, you can't give Joe excuses for everything. You're the leader out there making decisions.

“The excuses were there before the game started and that is a concern for me with the Test team because it happens a lot.

“On the fourth afternoon when they had the four wickets at tea, Joe had to go to Jofra and say: 'Stokesy is injured, he's got a dodgy shoulder. What did he do for us at Headingley? He bowled 25 overs on the trot and you went off with cramp. You went off and he bowled your overs. You've got to bowl his overs now, and Stuart, you've got to carry on.'

“It is just the mindset that you see. You need to have players go to the captain and say 'I'm having this' because we're in a desperate state.”
