Ben Stiller says it was 'time' for dad Jerry to die as he recalls final moments together

Ben Stiller has recalled his final moments with his dad Jerry, saying it was his "time".

The comedy legend died earlier this month from natural causes. He was 92.

Meet The Parents and Zoolander star Ben, 54, says he's so grateful that he was able to by his father's side.

Speaking to The New Yorker, Ben said he and his sister Amy, 58, were able to spend time with their father during his final days thanks to the fact that he didn't have any coronavirus symptoms.

He said: "He was just slowing down a lot, and he was dealing with a lot of issues. And so the last week or two were tougher for him. But he went peacefully, and he had a sense of humor, for sure, until the end."

"I hesitate to call it a sense of humor. He was just funny, and so he was always himself. He was almost ninety-three, and I think his body was kind of at that point where it was time."

Ben confirmed the sad news that his father, who starred alongside him in a number of movies, had died in a Twitter statement on May 11.

He wrote: "I’m sad to say that my father, Jerry Stiller, passed away from natural causes.

"He was a great dad and grandfather, and the most dedicated husband to Anne for about 62 years. He will be greatly missed. Love you Dad."

Jerry was best known for his roles in Seinfeld, as George Costanzas' father Frank, and in King of Queens, as Arthur Spooner.

He also starred in Zoolander 1 and 2 with his son, as well as Heavyweights, Hot Pursuit and The Heartbreak Kid.

Jerry and his wife, Ben's mum Anna Meara, found fame together with their comedy duo Stiller and Meara.

They appeared together on a string of television shows, including the Ed Sullivan Show.

They were happily married for 62 years before Anne died in 2015.
