Ben Smith on new challenge to run a marathon each day in every state of the USA

The amazing man who took on the unbelievable feat of running is back with a new challenge.

will be embarking on a mammoth task of running a marathon in all 50 states of the USA.

He will embark on this journey in March 2020, and ending in Hawaii on June 2020. Ahead of this he has began a series of Talk Tour events where he explains the challenge ahead.

Bristol Live caught up with him for a video interview, where Ben explains the full extent his challenge.

On top of running Ben revealed he won’t be flying or driving between destinations but will be cycling from state to state. The journey will see him cover a total of 18,500 miles over 104 days, which means he will be averaging 177 miles day.

By doing so he is hoping to raise a grand total of £1 million for the 401 Foundation, his charity that benefits local community groups and the Youth Sport Trust.

Ben explains his biggest issue - getting to Alaska.

The US state sits to the north of Canada, which would add a remarkable 2,232 miles to his task. Due to time and visa issues, its the one leg of the tour he will be forced to fly.

Ben’s journey’s all started when he was the victim of bullying, suffered from severe anxiety issues and what he calls a 'hiding of his true self.'

Starting a local Parkrun was the start of his journey to get himself back again.

Then he did a marathon, initially only intending to do one but he caught the bug.

He said: “I was quite frank and open about my struggles with afterwards.

"What I did shook me to the core and it took a good year for me to come to terms with it.

"Bit it also taught me a lot about mental health and what we can do together. I hope that is what this new challenge will do.”

Ben aims to increase awareness of the harmful effects of bullying and inspire people to challenge themselves to do something they thought they could never do.

People are also able to get involved from home, in the virtual run, walk and cycle challenge. The aim is to run, walk or cycle as many miles each day as you can between March 13 2019 and March 13 2020, for a cost of £24.99.
