NBA star Ben Simmons withdraws from Australia's Olympic squad for Tokyo

Basketball star Ben Simmons has told Boomers head coach Brian Goorjian he is withdrawing from Australia's Olympic squad.

Simmons, who came under fierce criticism for his play during the Philadelphia 76ers' recent NBA playoff loss, has said he needs time to work on skill development and has wished the team well in Tokyo.

"I have spoken with Ben and whilst we wanted him to be a part of our team, we understand and support his decision and he has made it clear that this is something that he wants to be a part of in the future," Goorjian said in a statement.

"The best thing for everybody right now is for him to go on and develop that skill package and improve in a couple of areas for his next season in the NBA, but the Boomers are always here for him. We wanted him to know that in his time of need, the culture and the guys here are behind him and support him".

Simmons struggled in Philadelphia's series loss to Atlanta, with the 24-year-old coming under scrutiny for his problems in converting free throws.

As the series went on, Simmons was opting to pass rather than take pressure shots late in games.

Speculation mounted after the 76ers' loss that Simmons could be traded in the off-season and that the Australian might opt out of the Olympics.

His decision adds to the list of major tournaments he has missed for Australia. Simmons was aiming to be part of the Boomers' squad at the Rio Olympics in 2016, but he withdrew to focus on the start of his NBA career.

He then was looking to represent Australia at the FIBA World Cup, but later announced he would prioritise joining up with his 76ers teammates ahead of the new season, rather than travel to China for the tournament.

Boomers star Patty Mills responded to the news with support for Simmons but disappointment at his absence in Tokyo.

"As a teammate, as a fan and as a supporter, we all want to see our best players putting on the green and gold and for me in particular, having that thought even to be able to share the court with Benny at some stage in the green and gold … unfortunately now is not going to be the time, and that is OK,” Mills said in a statement.
