The injury Ben Simmons suffered in the 76ers game against the Wizards had a lot of NBA fans shook on Wednesday.
Knee injuries are never great, in general. But non-contact knee injuries can be devastating. So when Simmons hobbled off the floor after seemingly not taking much contact to the knee, fans feared the worst.
Those fears were quelled for a second shortly after he went into the locker room. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Sixers were encouraged the injury wasn’t too serious because Simmons wasn’t experiencing any pain or swelling in the knee.
But fans feared the worst again on Thursday after Wojnarowski reported that Simmons was out indefinitely after suffering a subluxation of the knee.
The fear was back — mostly because most people didn’t know what a subluxation actually was. And it sounded terrible.
Most of the initial reaction was trying to find out what subluxation means.
We all collectively found out that a subluxation is what happens when a joint slides partially out of place. Yeah, that sounds awful. Not great at all.
Another quick Google search says that, for normal people, this injury takes about four to six weeks to recover from. But that’s not with the best of the best trainers and medical personnel NBA teams have to offer.
Still, everyone switched back to doom and gloom.
It might not be all bad. There’s still hope that Simmons might be able to return this season. The organization says they’ll have a better idea of their power forward’s immediate future in the next 24 hours.
Until then, everyone will be on pins and needles waiting to see how this unfolds. Hopefully, either way, Simmons can make a full recovery as quickly as possible.
