Ben Shephard welcomes Tipping Point first as visually impaired player competes

Tipping Point host Ben Shephard shared a huge first when the show welcomed a visually impaired contestant for the first time.

Good Morning Britain star Ben was missing from the breakfast programme last month as he shot the new series of the popular ITV teatime quiz.

As, he often does, he previewed what he was coming on Wednesday's episode on his Twitter page and it was on there that he revealed that a visually impaired player called Abigale would be taking part, assisted by a friend.

Having his first conversation with Abigale, Ben said: "In order to help your friend Elaine is backstage and she is watching everything that is going on.

"She'll be able to advise you by an earpiece as where and when is the best place and time to play your counters."

Ben continued: "She won't be able to give you any help with the questions unfortunately, much as that would have been lovely - our independent adjudicator is sat with her.

"But she will be able to assist you on how things are looking in the machine."

While she didn't get on too well against the machine, just like Ben, viewers at home had loads of admiration for Abigale and the show, with one tweeting: "You did a great thing by being on the show, Abigale. You showed how inclusive shows like Tipping Point really is. It has been wonderful. And of course, thank you for helping her, Elaine!"

Another commented: "Watching #TippingPoint, loving how they made it accessible for a partially-sighted contestant called Abigale. So good to see, here’s hoping for more of the same!"

And, responding to a visually impaired viewer who said that The Chase and Mastermind have had VI contestants for a number of years now and "we are as capable as anyone else, Ben wrote: "Totally agree although I’m sure you’ll agree there’s very different game play on Tipping Point to those shows which I love.

"We hope Abigale will inspire others to want to come and play."
