Ben Shephard updates fans from hospital bed after horror football injury

Ben Shephard has thanked fans for their love and messages after undergoing surgery.

The Good Morning Britain presenter updated his Instagram followers from his hospital bed and said he had a "long, slow" recovery ahead.

Ben, who also hosts Tipping Point, sustained a leg injury during a football game recently.

Last month he revealed he had ruptured his ACL, torn his meniscus and fractured his leg.

Speaking after surgery in a hospital gown and a support on his knee, Ben update his followers.

Posting on Instagram stories, he said: "Hi there everybody, thank you for all the amazing love and messages.

"For those who didn’t know I ruptured my ACL and tore my meniscus in my knee playing football."

Turning the camera around to reveal a faint orange stain on his leg, he continued: "That's how it looks at the moment. That's not fake tan by the way.

"I promise, despite my Essex roots, I didn't fake tan before my surgery.

"So they've repaired the ACL and the meniscus and now starts the rehab, the very slow, long rehab.

"I have to say, the painkillers seem to be doing the job right now."

It comes after Ben turned up to the ITV studio last month in a leg brace, revealing he'd "severed all the nerves" during a football game and carried on playing.

Speaking to co-host Susanna Reid at the time, Ben said: "A few weeks to go, you may remember I played in the Cup Final of the Arthur Dunn veterans cup, my old boys team.

"Without realising, I have ruptured my ACL, I've torn the meniscus and I've fractured part of my leg as well."

Dr Hilary Jones interjected: "That's a nasty injury, that is a nasty injury."

Ben revealed he wasn't aware of the extent of his injuries and carried on playing.

He said: "Interestingly I didn't realise I had done it quite so badly, I carried on playing for 25-minutes before I thought, 'It feels a little bit unstable, perhaps I should stop'.

"It turns out I had severed all the nerves which is why I couldn't feel any pain, and just carried on playing."
