Ben Shephard says 'strong' Kate Garraway's return to GMB is 'really important step'

Ben Shephard has said that it was "great to see Kate Garraway smiling again" and that her return to Good Morning Britain is a "really important step".

The 45-year-old appeared on the ITV programme today alongside Ranvir Singh as he spoke about Kate's emotional interview yesterday.

Kate, 53, spoke to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid as she returned to the studio for the first time since husband Derek Draper, 52, was hospitalised in March after contracting coronavirus.

Derek was later put into an induced coma which lasted 13 weeks. However, Kate warned that any celebrations over him waking up were premature - and that he still has a long road to recovery.

In the emotional interview, Kate explained that her children had "effectively lost their dad" to coronavirus and that she received a rallying cry from Piers during her darkest moments.

Kate also confirmed the that she would be back presenting on GMB on Monday.

Speaking about Kate today, Ben said: "It was really great to see Kate - it was in the studio - smiling, talking very honestly about the situation Derek is in.

"He continues to be critical, although he is out of the coma and they can FaceTime, it's not simple.

"She did have a really, really lovely announcement for all of us."

GMB aired a clip of Kate revealing that she would be coming back on Monday with Ben.

"I don't know how she does it," Ranvir said. "And hasn't she been through enough without having to sit next to you?"

Ben quipped: "Although she did say she wanted me to be rude to her... I'm warming up!"

He then explained her return to the studio, saying: "It's a big step, a really important step as she was talking about yesterday, openly, particularly for her and for Darcey and Billy and Derek's ongoing condition.

"And I think the other thing that was really key from Kate's perspective yesterday was that [...] there are families who are going through similar things up and down the country and her thoughts and concerns are with them as well."
