Ben Shephard's GMB update on Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper's coronavirus fight

Well-wishers were given an update on the condition of Kate Garraway's husband on Friday morning.

Derek Draper continues to fight coronavirus in hospital and ITV Good Morning Britain presenter Ben Shephard updated viewers.

Derek, 52, was struck down with Covid-19 last month and remains critically ill in a coma.

Wife Kate has remained at home with their two children, Darcey and Billy, unable to see him while the family have been speaking to him via video chat.

On Thursday, Kate penned an emotional thank you to well-wishers and she and the children stepped out for the Clap for Carers.

Ben told viewers on Friday's GMB that Kate had given an update and proceeded to share the latest news, the Mirror reports.

He said: "A lot of you have been asking how Kate, Darcey, and Billy are, and Derek.

"We can update you because Kate did last night on her Instagram."

He then read out her post, which said: "So our #nhsclap was a little different tonight.

"We still clapped & cheered as much as ever but I couldn’t film on my phone as had Derek on FaceTime throughout!

"Of course we can’t KNOW but I believe he can hear us & thought at least the incredible @nhs team’s looking after him would hear a fraction of our gratitude."

Kate added: "Billy made this for his Dad’s carers to show how much he means to our family & to say thank you for fighting to bring him back to us.

"I am hoping they will let Derek have it by his bed. But even if they can’t THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts - you are superheroes.

"Love to all in these terrible times - the separation from loved ones whatever the reason is so tough. #staystrong#staypositive#keephopealive."

Ben and co-host Ranvir Singh revealed Kate was hoping to get Billy's lego creation to Derek's hospital bedside, but would understand if this was not allowed.

As Ben praised the NHS as "superheroes" he also referred to some former Covid-19 coma patients who believed they were aware of things going on around them, as Kate hoped this was the case with Derek.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
