Ben Shephard asks if AstraZeneca vaccine concerns are just 'EU playing politics'

Good Morning Britain 's Ben Shephard questioned why European countries have temporarily halter the roll out of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine over fears it causes blood clots.

Denmark, Norway, Bulgaria, Iceland, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands have all temporarily suspended their use of the AstraZeneca jab.

The countries decided to do so over concerns of possible side effects.

Last week, the World Health Organisation (WHO), the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said there was no evidence of a link between the jab and an increased risk of blood clots.

Susanna Reid said: "Unfortunately, more countries in the EU seem to be losing confidence, if just temporarily, in the jab.

"Germany France Italy have all halted rollouts of the vaccine, other smaller European countries have already done the same thing.

"When you have countries of that scale joining the concern, where does this leave the vaccine?"

Dr Hilary replied: "It is extraordinary.

"Because whilst those individual countries and their regulatory bodies are saying let's just pause and have a precautionary look at the data, all the clinical trials, the European medicine agency, our own MHRA, the WHO, 17 million people who have been vaccinated in Europe and the UK - all the data shows there is no causal link, no evidence at all the blood clots are related to the vaccine.

Dr Hilary said the decision was "extraordinary" and there was no evidence linking the vaccine to blood clots (ITV)

"And when you look at what Germany and Italy are deciding to do, this is countries that have huge problems with the third wave.

"In Paris they are putting people on trains because they have ran out of intensive care beds... This precautionary measure will cost lives.

"For the number of people who have reported blood clots after being vaccinated, we are talking about 30 for the AstraZeneca vaccine and 38 for the Pfizer."

Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard spoke to Dr Hilary (ITV)

Ben asked: "So where is it coming from Hilary? Lots of us are sitting at home and wondering, is this just the EU having a beef with the UK, playing politics, and finding a way of digging out the UK because it's our vaccine?"

"Well if it is, it's extremely foolish," replied Dr Hilary. "With any fairly novel medicine or device or vaccine, we have a stringent reporting scheme where anything anyone experiences should be reported just to see there are no consistent side effects."

Pregnancy poses a higher risk of blood clots - and there is no suggestion pregnancy will be banned, he joked.

He also said the risk of death or complications from Covid are much higher than any risk the vaccine could pose.
