I, like all of you, was ecstatic when they saw Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger throwing a football on Saturday. This was the first time anyone saw Roethlisberger throw the football since he injured his elbow last September.
According to Roethlisberger, he’s on track to be medically cleared in around two months. This would put another update in late April. Just as the 2020 NFL draft is starting.
This could create a potential problem for the Steelers if they go into the 2020 NFL draft without a clear understanding of where Roethlisberger is in his recovery. This is making the assumption the Steelers will address quarterback in the draft. If they really feel like they can go into 2020 with the same quality of depth they had in 2019, then everyone should say an extra prayer for Roethlisberger’s elbow.
In terms of the draft, the Steelers are going to be somewhat limited without a first-round pick, they would have to roll the dice in the second or third round on a high-upside prospect who isn’t NFL ready yet.
Two players who fit that mold are former Georgia QB Jake Fromm and former Oklahoma QB Jalen Hurts. Either guy in the late second or even better the third round would be a value and give Pittsburgh another option in case Roethlisberger is injured and looking ahead to the future.
