Ben & Jerry’s launches ice cream for dogs

Ben & Jerry’s is launching ice cream for dogs. Yes, really.

The confectionary brand has announced that the range will be called Doggie Desserts and comprises two sweet treats.

There’s one named Pontch’s Mix, which is a peanut butter and pretzel swirl flavour, and then there’s Rosie’s Batch, which tastes like pumpkin and cream.

The flavour names were chosen as they are the names of the dogs owned by employees at Ben & Jerry’s.

For those concerned about the prospect of dogs consuming dairy, Ben & Jerry’s has ensured that the ice cream treats only have a small amount of cream inside them, making them safe for dogs to eat.

Currently, the Doggie Desserts are only available in the US.

Individual cups of the desserts are going to be sold for $1.29 (94p), while multipacks will be sold for $4.49 (£3.28) at supermarkets and pet supply shops.

News of the product comes after Ben & Jerry’s shared tips for storing ice cream, the kind that is eaten by humans, saying there is “nothing worse than freezer-burned ice cream”, which when your freezer leaves large crystals on the top of the ice cream.

“Over time, ice evaporates. As the moisture leaves the ice cream and joins forces with moist ambient air, it refreezes on the ice cream’s surface, creating the tell-tale crystals that indicate freezer burn,” the company explains on its website. “What you’re left with is a concoction that’s icy, crunchy and kinda yucky.”

The dessert company outlined six tips for properly storing ice cream on its website, where it revealed that one useful tip involves storing your ice cream pint upside down.
