Ben Godfrey returns as Frank Lampard picks strong Everton team for Manchester United in FA Cup

Frank Lampard has named a strong starting line-up for the FA Cup third round tie with Manchester United.

With Everton in the bottom three of the Premier League and speculation over his future swirling, Amadou Onana comes straight back into the team after serving his suspension during the game against Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday. Ben Godfrey also returns after his heroics against Manchester City as Lampard looks set to revert to the three centre back formation that earned Everton a point in that game.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is on the bench - as expected after featuring in the past two league games - along with Anthony Gordon, who is available but has only just overcome an illness that kept him out of the games with Man City and Brighton.

Lampard's approach is a far cry from that which he took towards his last cup game, the Carabao Cup defeat at Bournemouth. He maintained he took that game seriously after making 11 changes - saying this was due to injuries and the desire to give squad players an opportunity to impress. Two months later and with more than 9,000 Blues making the trip, a number of key players are involved for the visit to Old Trafford.

Jordan Pickford starts in goal with Conor Coady, James Tarkowski and Godfrey in front of him. Vitaly Mykolenko starts at left wing back and club captain Seamus Coleman comes in for Nathan Patterson, who is out for six weeks with a medial ligament injury. Onana, Idrissa Gueye and Alex Iwobi -Lampard's preferred midfield three - start together and Demarai Gray supports Maupay up top.

Ellis Simms makes it to the bench but there is no room for the other latest crop of academy starlets. Tom Cannon, Stanley Mills and Isaac Price, all said to have been in first team contention after the World Cup break, miss out and instead are in action for the Under-21s, who face West Ham United tonight.

Starting XI: Pickford; Mykolenko, Coady, Tarkowski, Godfrey, Coleman; Onana, Iwobi, Gueye; Gray, Maupay
