Ben Godfrey hands Frank Lampard major Everton injury boost and makes bold U21 claim

Frank Lampard has been handed a major boost after Ben Godfrey declared he is 'ready to get going again' after a long spell on the sidelines.

Godfrey hasn’t featured for Everton’s first-team since he suffered a broken leg in his side’s 1-0 home defeat to Chelsea on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

The defender was stretchered off the Goodison Park pitch after suffering the fracture in the early stages of his side’s season opener. He sustained the injury while challenging Kai Havertz in front of the Gwladys Street.

Since going under the knife, Godfrey has been working on a rehabilitation programme with Everton's medical team at Finch Farm, and he now appears to be closing in on full fitness after joining in full squad training earlier this week.

And when asked how he is getting on following the session, Godfrey said: “Good. I am loving being back. It felt like a long time but I am ready to get going again now.

“The physios have done a good job on me, to be fair. They have worked really hard and I have to thank them, they have put a lot of hours into me.

"I am feeling back strong and fit, and as I say, just ready to go. I appreciate being fit now after so long out.”

Godfrey, who played 36 games for Everton in the 2020/21 campaign after signing from Norwich City and then a further 27 matches last season, has been improving his fitness by playing for the club’s under-21 side in recent weeks.

After starting against Birmingham City and Southampton, Godfrey completed his first 90 minutes of action in the young Blues' 2-1 victory over Mansfield Town in the Papa Johns Trophy earlier this month.

“It was good and it was good of them to let me get involved and get some minutes in,” Godfrey said in a chat with evertontv.

“We have got some good young players down there. The standard was good and it deffo helped me get minutes in the legs."

Before Godfrey concluded, saying: “I’m buzzing, and like I say, just so appreciative of being fit.”
