Ben Garner explains why Bristol Rovers have rewarded Zain Walker with new deal after fine pre-season

It took Zain Walker little more than two months to earn an improved contract at Bristol Rovers, with the teenage winger penning a new two-year deal.

The 18-year-old, one of the stars of Rovers' pre-season with two goals, only graduated from the club's academy in June as a first-year professional.

But his impressive efforts over recent weeks have caught the eye of manager Ben Garner, who has tied the exciting prospect down to fresh terms. The club confirmed the news on Friday.

"We are pleased that Zain has agreed an extended deal, to continue his development with us," Garner told the club's website.

"He's a young player that has really impressed during pre-season, with his performances and his potential.

"Zain grew up near where I’m from and he has a number of attributes that young players from South London naturally develop from that environment.

"What he has shown alongside those attributes is a desire to learn, to improve, and to mature.

"He craves knowledge from the coaching staff, always wants to do extra, and analyses all his training sessions and matches.

"We want Zain to carry forward the determination he's shown over pre-season and try to force his way into the team on a regular basis.”
