Ben Foster heroics in chaotic finale send Ryan Reynolds wild in Wrexham win - 5 talking points

Wrexham's National League title hopes were saved by Ben Foster, as the newly-signed goalkeeper kept out a 96th minute penalty to earn a historic 3-2 win over Notts County.

John Bostock's stunning free-kick on the stroke of half-time put Notts County ahead, and it looked as though Wrexham had been rocked after a frustrating 45 minutes. But they came out firing in the second half, with Paul Mullin once again becoming the hero as he levelled the scores shortly after the restart before assisting Jacob Mendy who put Wrexham ahead again.

But the game was far from over, as Kyle Cameron fired Notts County level to rock Wrexham again before a howler in defence gifted Elliott Lee with the eventual winner. But just when Wrexham thought they'd won the game, Notts County were awarded a 96th minute penalty.

But sticking with the script, Foster guessed the right way and kept out the last-minute effort to secure three points for Wrexham, and that could be it for the National League title. Here, Mirror Football bring you five things we learned as the National League title race took a huge twist.

The Wrexham rise continues

Wrexham are now just four games away from a potential National League title, as they're three points ahead of Notts County with a game in hand. Since being taken over by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2021 Wrexham have been handed an unbelievable lift, and they have aspirations of climbing up the divisions.

Their clash against Notts County was worthy of a Hollywood film itself, with the chaotic game leaving both sets of fans on the edge of their seats throughout. The main actor Mullin was once again in the spotlight, and they'll be hoping for a happy ending this season.

There isn't an end goal in sight for Wrexham, and the sky is the limit for the team owned by Reynolds and McElhenney. But their first task is to climb back into the football league, and they're close to doing so.

Paul Mullin the Hollywood hero

When Wrexham needed a response there was only one man waiting to deliver, and Mullin stepped up to score his 35th league goal of the season. But Mullin then turned provider as he found Mendy unmarked at the back post, and the 23-year-old sent The Racecourse Ground wild.

But Wrexham then lost their lead following heavy Notts County pressure, and it looked as though they could leave with just a point. However, Mullin was once again in the right place at the right time to pounce on a defensive error, and assisted Lee for the winning goal.

To earn promotion it's vital that you have a capable striker in your ranks, and Mullin has proved yet again this season that he can do it all. Many fans feel as though the 28-year-old is too good for the National League, but he and Wrexham may not be there for much longer.

Ben Foster proves his worth and then some

When Wrexham signed Foster to a short-term deal, fans were ecstatic as they had a former Premier League goalkeeper on board. But his arrival didn't automatically confirm Wrexham's promotion, and Foster was aware just how tough the National League can be.

After a clean sheet on his debut, Foster was furious as he conceded three against Halifax Town. But he was in fine form against Notts County in his biggest test yet, and he kept his best moment for the very last kick of the game.

A 96th minute penalty was saved by Foster to save three important points for Wrexham, and his move may have been summed up in that one moment. It's the first penalty he's faced at Wrexham, and he held firm to keep Notts County out.

Football can be a cruel game

Wrexham and Notts County are very much in a league of their own, as they've blown their National League competition away this season. Despite there being 24 teams in the league, the two title rivals have only been competing against one another this season, and it may see only one of them be rewarded.

There's only one automatic promotion place up for grabs, and after Monday's stunning clash it looks like it may be going to Wrexham. But Notts County have broke records this season, and will be extremely unlucky if they don't manage to see off their play-off competition.

With star striker Macauley Langstaff scoring 41 goals this season, and helping Notts County put 100 points on the board, in any other season they'd have walked the National League and likely already be crowned winners. But football can be cruel, and there's a chance their record-breaking efforts could amount to nothing.

The power of the 12th man

The Racecourse Ground may be one of the oldest in football, but it's also one of the loudest when it comes to crucial games. They may have been handed a modern lift with the arrival of Reynolds and McElhenney, but Wrexham have had a huge following for years.

The noise on Monday was electric, and the home side fed off the atmosphere when they were initially behind in the game. The crowd motivated Wrexham to chase a route back into the game, and they carried them to clinch all three points.

There's still four games to play, but fans are already starting to make plans for the promotion party after they enjoyed victory in the biggest game of their season so far. The players did their bit, but the fans were also a huge part of the success.
