Ben Folds pops cork on intimate winery series

ON KEY: US singer-songwriter Ben Folds will welcome music back to Bimbadgen with the Cellar Door Series.

PIANO maestro Ben Folds will headline the return of live music to Bimbadgen next month when he performs the first Cellar Door Series show.

Folds will be joined by Australian indie-folk artist Gordi on Saturday, March 20 at the Pokolbin winery.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic Bimbadgen has not hosted live music since February 29 last year when UK '80s pop star Rick Astley co-headlined with Norway's a-ha. Scheduled shows with English songwriter James Blunt (November 21) and Scottish new wave heavyweights Simple Minds (December 5) were subsequently cancelled or postponed.

The Cellar Door Series will feature intimate acoustic or stripped-back performances accompanied with boutique food and fine wine.

Folds, who has previously lived in Adelaide with his Australian ex-wife, was playing in Australia last March on his Symphonic tour when the pandemic locked down the world.

Unable to return to the US, he chose to remain in Sydney and worked on a new album in isolation, released the single 2020 and performed regular live stream shows.

The 54-year-old is best known for his alt-rock power-pop trio The Ben Folds Five, which enjoyed a series of hits in the late '90s including Brick, Army, Underground, Battle Of Who Could Care Less and One Angry Dwarf & 200 Solemn Faces.

Folds also scored a solo hit with the title track from his debut solo album, Rockin' The Suburbs.

Tickets go on sale Friday at 1pm from Ticketmaster.
