Ben Foden's wife says US is more Covid-safe than UK as she posts video shaming shoppers

Ben Foden 's American wife Jackie Belanoff Smith has claimed the US is more Covid-safe than UK as she posted a video shaming shoppers at a British supermarket.

The couple, who live in Connecticut with their baby daughter, returned to Ben's native UK shortly before Christmas.

Jackie filmed a video and posted it online yesterday showing the pair heading to a branch of Morrisons to do their grocery shopping.

She captioned it: "About to go grocery shopping and if anyone is wondering why England's corona cases are booming, I'll show you why."

As she sat in the car before entering the shop, Jackie said: "We're going to go to Morrisons and I just wanted to show all my friends that no one wears masks in this store.

"Especially the people that work there and that's why America is actually safer with all the safety precautions they do and everything."

She then took videos of shoppers in the store, catching several on camera who were wearing their mask pulled down under their nose.

She filmed Ben, 35, standing close to one woman who was not wearing a mask as she stood in the aisle.

Jackie went on to criticise staff at the store for not wearing masks, even though they are not obligated to while working behind a protective screen.

After finishing her shopping, she posted a message online calling the situation "nuts".

Jackie wrote: "Yah so those were just some of those who I could quickly catch on cam [camera].

"Last time I went shopping, I asked the manager why no employees were wearing masks.

"They said because they were behind dividers and Boris Johnson said that was fine enough.

"When I asked employees where their masks were, they said: 'You're wearing one so I don't have to.' It's nuts anyway."

It comes just days after Morrisons bosses tightened the rules over shoppers wearing facemasks in stores - vowing to not let anyone shop without a face covering unless they are exempt.

David Potts, Morrisons’ chief executive said: "Those who are offered a face covering and decline to wear one won't be allowed to shop at Morrisons unless they are medically exempt.

"Our store colleagues are working hard to feed you and your family, please be kind."

A representative for Morrisons told us: "Since the start of the pandemic we have introduced and consistently maintained thorough and robust safety measures in all our stores.

"These include managed store entrances, sanitising stations, plastic screens, free face coverings, managed checkout queues, rigorous and regular cleaning, clear signage and instructions for customers, and a strengthened policy on face coverings."
