Ben Doak's star soars as Celtic youngster scores Scotland hat trick to secure Euros spot

Brilliant Ben Doak struck a superb hat-trick as Scotland clinched a spot at this summer’s U17 European Championships in Israel in sensational style.

Brian McLaughlin’s side knew nothing less than a comprehensive victory would see them stand a chance as one of seven best-placed runners-up.

But they blew away Georgia with a six-goal salvo - with Celtic ace Doak helping himself to a treble.

Doak’s performances on the wing have seen him elevated into Ange Postecoglou’s first team and have attracted the attention of Liverpool. And on this evidence it’s easy to see why as he produced another performance full of poise, powerful running and precision finishing.

Scotland knew nothing less than victory would do and Partick Thistle’s Cameron Cooper fired them into the lead in sensational style after just nine minutes when he latched onto Dylan Reid’s flick and bent an unstoppable shot high past Soso Kopaliani from 20 yards.

Scotland had a foothold and Rory Wilson could have doubled the advantage but miscued his effort from Bailey Rice’s corner.

Georgia, sitting on three points before kick off having beaten the Czech Republic at the weekend, were neat on the ball but struggled to carve any openings to trouble Jacob Pazikas’ goal in the opening half.

In contrast Scotland were getting plenty of joy on the flanks with Doak again showing why he’s been courted by the Anfield giants with a series of incisive runs into the box on the right crying out for a finishing touch.

And it was Doak who doubled the lead after 42 minutes. Magnus Mackenzie’s low cross from the left found its way to the back post where the winger still had plenty of work to do but fired a low shot inside the near post.

Just a minute later the diminutive Doak had made it 3-0. This time he showed Aleksandre Narimanidze a clean pair of heels before cutting into the box and firing across Kopaliani.

Georgia reduced the deficit when Givi Khachidze’s 25 yard rocket flew past Pazikas and into the far top corner two minutes into the second half.

But Wilson, who Aston Villa are desperate to snatch from Rangers’ grasp, restored the three goal advantage when he controlled another Mackenzie cross on his chest and volleyed powerfully past Kopaliani.

It was 5-1 in the 61st minute when another driving run into the box from Doak ended with his cross being deflected into his own net by Saba Kharchilava.

And the Hoops youngster capped a memorable night with his hat-trick six minutes from the end, knocking sub Alfie Bavidge’s cross from the left home from six yards.
