Ben Dawson will take the hotseat for Newcastle United's game with Wolves today (11am).
The caretaker boss and his back-room team were keen to use as many members of the squad as possible in the Premier League Asia Trophy but competition rules mean that only 10 substitutions can be made in total.
It means that United won't be able to field a different XI in each half which is usually the preferred option in a first pre-season game for United.
And one player will have to play the full 90 minutes despite a lack of match practice for Newcastle players with no friendly minutes in the tank so far.
Dawson told the Chronicle: "The bottom line is we are putting a team out to get a result.
"There are limitations with the substitutions.
"We have everybody available.
"We do have one or two returning from injury but we will manage the squad accordingly."
With 27 players on board and only 21 getting a chance to play against Wolves, Dawson said: "Because of the rules there will be a few named in the squad that won't play at all.
"We can only make 10 subs across the whole game so somebody will have to play 90 minutes which isn't ideal at this stage of pre-season.
"But it is what we signed up for and we will find a way to accommodate it."
