Tyson Fury's head trainer Ben Davison appeared to aim a sly dig at Anthony Joshua following his victory over Andy Ruiz Jr by claiming he is a 'poor man's' version of Fury.
Joshua comfortably beat Ruiz in their rematch with a scorecard of 118-110 118-110 119-109 to become a two-time heavyweight champion, and in doing so avoided another humiliating defeat which could have effectively ended his career.
Some have now tipped Joshua to take on fellow Brit Fury in the near future, but speaking to IFL TV Davison appeared to suggest that although he was impressed by Joshua, he still believes his client to be superior, and thinks Joshua adopted Fury's fighting style in order to get the win.
"Good performance, he added another side to his game, done what he needed to do, got the win which was the most important thing," Davison said.
"That's exactly what he needed to employ. It was almost, not in a horrible way, but it was like a poor man's Tyson Fury , wasn't it?
"That’s not in a nasty way because, you know, obviously he can’t do it to the level of Tyson but it was the tactics and he did well, it was a 50-50 fight and he came out with the win, so it was a good performance."
Davison added that he was pleased for British boxing that Joshua had come out on top, and was looking forward to some more big fights in the country in the near future.
He continued: "It looked a big ring but listen I’m not going to say ‘oh this, oh that’ because it’s better for British boxing that Joshua won because it means there’s big shows in the UK and if there’s big shows it should mean big money for prospects who are on that show."
