Ben Davies offered Celtic contract but Bournemouth look to hijack deal for in demand defender

Preston defender Ben Davies has received a pre-contract offer from Celtic but it's understood that reports he's agreed a deal are premature.

The 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and is free to negotiate a move to Parkhead.

Manager Neil Lennon is in need of defensive cover with centre-back Christopher Jullien out for the season.

In addition Jeremie Frimpong has been sold to Bayer Leverkusen for £11.5million.

Kris Ajer has filled in on the right but that has meant moving Nir Bitton to centre-back.

Davies can play on the left or in the centre and if a deal could be found for this month that would allow the Norwegian to continue on the flank.

Record Sport understands that the 25-year-old does have a pre-contract offer on the table from Celtic but reports that a deal is done are wide of the mark.

A number of clubs are interested in signing Davies, with Bournemouth making an offer to take him to the Vitality Stadium this month.

Preston boss Alex Neil admitted this week: "I haven’t really heard anything (about Celtic) apart from what was in the paper.

“Ben hasn’t said a word to me about it. He has been good all the way through, this has only just appeared.

“As far as I’m aware from the discussions I’ve had before with Ben, he has so far committed to certainly being here to at least the end of the season.

"That has been the discussion I’ve had to this point, naturally that is subject to change but I’ve not been made aware of any change.

“I’m not in control of this situation so it is a hard question for me to answer.

“I could say, ‘Yes, he will be here until the end of the season’ and then he leaves tonight and I look silly.”
