Ben Davies returns to Tottenham after withdrawing from Wales squad ahead of World Cup qualifiers

Ben Davies has withdrawn from the Wales squad ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

A regular in the Tottenham squad this season with his game time coming mainly in the Europa Conference League, the left-back wasn't included in Nuno Espirito Santo's 23-man party for last Thursday's European tie against NS Mura.

Davies was once again absent on Sunday for Tottenham's 2-1 win over Aston Villa but he subsequently linked up with the national team for their games against Czech Republic and Estonia.

However, Wales confirmed on Wednesday morning that the experienced defender is one of two players to withdraw from the squad due to illness.

“Ben Davies and David Brooks have had to withdraw from the squad due to illness. Brysiwch wella hogia! (get well soon)," read a tweet on the official Wales Twitter account.

Prior to heading off on international duty, Espirito Santo revealed that Davies had had a tough week when asked by football.london about his absence from the squad to face NS Mura.

"He has a problem on an inflammation on his appendix," explained the head coach. "He has been taken care of, he has had some scans, but he was not able to play, he was in pain.

"We wish that he recovers soon and he can join us."

Davies will now be using the next week or so to return to full fitness ahead of Spurs' game away at Newcastle United once the second international break of the season comes to a close.

A regular in the Wales squad in recent years, Davies will have his eye on making his international return in November for their final two World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Belgium.

Rob Page's side, who have four qualifying games remaining, are currently third in Group E and level on points with Czech Republic but they do crucially have a game in hand over their rivals.
