Ben Davies loan clause emerges as Souness and Neville agree on next Liverpool transfer move

Your morning digest for Monday, August 16.

Ben Davies deal explained as Liverpool defender set for loan move

Ben Davies appears to be on the cusp of a loan move to Sheffield United and Liverpool have outlined the terms of the agreement, including a potential promotion bonus.

It’s understood that there will be no option to buy the 26-year-old - with the Reds looking to keep their options open surrounding the former Preston defender - while the Blades will also pay a loan fee, alongside an additional amount should the club secure a return to the Premier League.

Davies made his Liverpool 'debut' as a late substitute in the recent friendly with Osasuna, after previously featuring in eight matchday squads for the Reds last season.

He had also attracted interest from Celtic, Bournemouth and Burnley but new Sheffield United boss Slavisa Jokanovic was eager to get the deal over the line.

Gary Neville and Graeme Souness agree on next Liverpool transfer target

Both Gary Neville and Graeme Souness believe Liverpool will contend for the title this season but have urged the club to make one last signing before the transfer window shuts.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Manchester City’s defeat to Tottenham, Souness outlined the key difference between the current side and the Liverpool team that won the title in 2019/20.

“I think it was very easy to look at Liverpool and talk about their front three and say how special they were but I think a lot of their great play came from the three midfield players.

“[Gini] Wijnaldum’s gone, [Jordan] Henderson’s a year older, James Milner’s a year older.

“I’d like to see something else in midfield. It’s going to be a long hard season.”

Asked who would finish higher between Liverpool and Manchester United, Gary Neville said he couldn’t separate the two sides - but highlighted the same issue as Souness.

“I do think Liverpool will miss Wijnaldum and do need a midfield player”, he said.
