Ben Davies 'dodged a bullet' in Celtic's failed transfer bid as Ally McCoist details Hoops 'turmoil'

Rangers legend Ally McCoist insists Ben Davies 'dodged a bullet' when Liverpool came in and snatched him from Celtic.

The defender is set to seal a move to Anfield in a whirlwind move that came around when he was expected to sign a pre-contract with Neil Lennon's men.

The Celtic boss admitted he was disappointed to be 'gazumped' for Davies but understood why he chose to head to Liverpool instead when they came in.

And McCoist reckons the form of Celtic this season and the amount of players who seemingly want out of the club means Davies may have got a lucky break.

He believes Davies would have been better moving to Glasgow for more game time in normal circumstances, but even though he's likely to fall behind Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez next season, McCoist beieves it might actually still be the better move for him.

He told Sky Sports News: “Do you know something, in normal circumstances I would have said yes, it would be a good move.

“But I’ve got to be brutally honest with you, Celtic look as if they are in turmoil at this moment in time.

“Frimpong is away to Germany, it looks like they’ve brought in Jonjoe Kenny but at the same time, Kristoffer Ajer has been playing at right back.

“The signing of Shane Duffy has just been one disaster after another to be honest with you.

“It looks to me, and it has looked to me for five or six weeks that there’s half a dozen of the Celtic boys don’t want to be there. Whether it’s (Olivier) Ntcham, (Kris) Ajer will move on, it looks like he wants to move on, Edouard will move on at some time.

“So in answer to your question, in normal circumstances I would have said yes, it would be a good move for Ben Davies because he’d be going to a fantastic football club and playing far more regularly.

“You would think when (Virgil) Van Dijk and (Joe) Gomez get fit again they’ll come straight back into the side, so as I say, normally it would be a good move but there could be a train of thought that he’s actually dodged a bullet.”
