Ben Chilwell drops Instagram hint over Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea team selection vs Liverpool

Chelsea will be looking to halt a run of two successive league draws and seal a return to winning ways when they travel to Anfield to face Liverpool this evening.

The Blues, who were beaten 2-0 by the Reds at Stamford Bridge back in September, have been forced to settle for a point in each of their last two Premier League outings, playing out a 1-1 stalemate with Southampton and a drab goalless affair with Manchester United.

But despite that, they do remain unbeaten under head coach Thomas Tuchel in all competitions, with tonight's trip to Merseyside marking his tenth game in charge.

Liverpool v Chelsea: Premier League match preview

Although Tuchel has led his team to victories over both Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid, tonight's clash with Liverpool could be seen as his sternest test yet in the eyes of some, despite the Reds' faltering form in recent weeks.

Ahead of tonight's clash with Jurgen Klopp's troops, who will be looking to build on their 2-0 win over Sheffield United on Sunday evening, the Blues have once again been forced to leave Thiago Silva out of their plans, with the Brazilian still not fully recovered from the thigh injury he sustained in the win over Spurs last month.

Speaking ahead of tonight's game, Tuchel issued an update on the former AC Milan star, confirming that he would not be ready in time to face Klopp's side.

"Thiago made his first training with the team, but did not finish the last exercise – not of any pain or anything, just to be aware of not taking a risk," explained Tuchel.

"I assume he is in training today but he is not at 100 percent, so he will not join the squad for Liverpool."

Fortunately for Tuchel, though, Silva is the only player he will be without this evening, with every other member of the squad, including Callum Hudson-Odoi, fit and available for selection.

That means that the German could face some tricky selection dilemmas when piecing together his plans for how to combat the Reds this evening.

Since succeeding Frank Lampard in January, one position that Tuchel has frequently rotated is left wing-back. Both Ben Chilwell and Marcos Alonso have been handed opportunities to impress and prove their worth to the new boss.

In the Blues' last three league outings, Chilwell has started once - the draw against United - whilst Alonso has won the left wing-back battle on two occasions.

But with Chilwell having helped Chelsea record a clean sheet against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, could Tuchel be set to allow the England international to retain his place tonight at Anfield?

That could well be the case as if his social media activity is anything to go by.

Taking to Instagram, the former Leicester City man has posted a fixture advertisement graphic, featuring himself, Timo Werner, Mason Mount and Antonio Rudiger, suggesting that he is very much looking forward to the contest and in line to start.

Interestingly, several other members of Chelsea's squad have done the same when starting this season, including both Jorginho and Mount.

However, it should be noted that other players have done in the past when only named on the substitutes bench and not in the starting line-up.

Since Tuchel took charge at Stamford Bridge, Chilwell has featured just four times, meaning Alonso has had the edge in the left wing-back battle so far.

In all, Chilwell has made 25 appearances since joining the club last summer, scoring two goals and chipping in with five assists.
