Ben Chilwell could get his dream Chelsea shirt number after £50m transfer but on one condition

Chelsea continue to be linked with reinforcements at left-back during the summer transfer window.

Leicester City's Ben Chilwell is a name that has long been tipped to join Frank Lampard's revolution and latest reports suggest a deal between the two clubs is making significant progress.

According to Football Insider, the Blues are close to a breakthrough now that the Foxes are said to be ready to accept a reduced £50m package for the defender after initially demanding in the region of £75m-£80m.

The defenders Chelsea have been linked with

If Chilwell was to join the Blues, supporters will be looking forward to seeing the England international holding the Chelsea shirt at his unveiling - but what squad number could the left-back take at Stamford Bridge?

Since breaking into the first-team picture at Leicester, Chilwell has worn number 3 and 30 on the back of his shirt. At Chelsea, the incumbent no. 3 is Marcos Alonso, and the Spaniard has forced his way into Lampard's plans since the 2019/20 campaign resumed.

The defender has been touted as someone who could be sold this summer, but it's more likely that Emerson Palmieri will make way to make room for a new left-back.

This means Chilwell will only receive his favoured number if a decision is made to sell Alonso this summer or if he decides to relinquish his current shirt.

With that said, Chilwell did wear no.25 during a loan spell at Huddersfield. So, what other squad numbers will be available to the 23-year-old if he does sign for the Blues at some point in the summer?

Below, we take a look to see what numbers are currently free at Stamford Bridge.

No.6

The current owner of this shirt number technically is Danny Drinkwater who spent the first half of the season on loan at Burnley.

He returned to west London in January, although he was sent to Aston Villa in another loan deal.

No.14

The No.14 is also currently up for grabs until Tiemoue Bakayoko returns from his loan at AS Monaco.

No.15

Currently, vacant following Victor Moses' loan move to Fenerbahce at the start of 2019.

The Nigerian moved to Inter Milan at the beginning of the year and could earn a permanent contract with the Serie A giants should he impress.

No.16

No.16 could be a potential option for a new signing with Kenedy out on loan once again.

No.21

Davide Zappacosta's loan move to AS Roma has been disrupted by injury, but his squad number at the Bridge is currently vacant.

No.25

Although the No.25 shirt has not been officially retired by the club, it seems that Chelsea do not want anyone to take on Gianfranco Zola's famous number.

Departing for his home country back in 2003, nobody at the club has worn the shirt since the Italian maestro departed over a decade ago.

No.26

As is the case with the No.25 shirt, John Terry's No.26 may well be left vacant following his trophy-laden spell at Stamford Bridge.

No.27

Andreas Christensen's move to the no.4 has left the no.27 vacant.

No.30

This became vacant when David Luiz joined Arsenal in the summer.

It's a squad number that has been worn by the likes of Yossi Benayoun, Tiago and Jesper Gronjkaer in the past.

No.32

The No.32 shirt has been vacant following Marco Amelia's departure in 2016.

Andreas Christensen, the club's current No.4, had worn the number during the 2012/13 season.
