Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been hailed as "world class" after his stunning performance against Brentford.
The Blues ran out 1-0 winners in west London courtesy of Ben Chilwell’s excellent half-volley.
Victory saw Chelsea remain in top spot in the Premier League - one point clear of Liverpool following their 5-0 thumping of Claudio Ranieri’s Watford at Vicarage Road.
Thomas Tuchel’s men were hugely indebted to goalkeeper Edouard Mendy though after the Senegalese stopper produced a number of stunning saves throughout the clash to secure what was his 20th Premier League clean sheet in just his 38th start.
In all, he made six saves throughout the game, some of them firmly sitting into the spectacular category.
Chelsea goalscorer Chilwell was hugely complimentary of his teammate’s performance at the Brentford Community Stadium.
Talking to Match of the Day after the game, he said: “I’m happy with that [the goal], very happy to score a goal but I think we’ve got to thank Edou [Mendy] today.
“I don’t know how many saves he made but he made a lot of very important saves. He does it every week, he bails us out.
“Whether it’s once or twice or today, several occasions, he’s a world class goalkeeper and I think today, he’s the one we’ve got to thank.”
Chilwell’s assessment of Mendy performance is something that pundit and former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has agreed with.
“Tuchel said lucky but it wasn’t lucky, Mendy was just world class today from start to finish. Even his stature, he looks really good, the way he holds himself,” Richards said.
“Mendy was by far the man of the match. We talk about spreading. I speak to Kasper Schmeichel a lot and he talks about spreading his body, making it so hard for the striker. Absolutely outstanding, world class.”
