Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has cancelled his campaign events for the day after three campaign volunteers and a staff member were injured in a car crash in Iowa.

The retired neurosurgeon’s campaign released a statement saying that the four were injured when their van “hit a patch of ice and flipped on its side where it was struck by another vehicle”.

One volunteer was transported to the trauma center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, the Carson statement says. The other three van occupants were being “checked out” at a local Iowa hospital.

Carson was said to be travelling to Omaha to be with the family of the volunteer in the trauma center.
