Ben Brereton on finally breaking his duck following £7m move from Nottingham Forest to Blackburn

Ben Brereton has spoken of his relief after finally netting his first goal since he left Nottingham Forest to join Blackburn Rovers last summer.

The £7m forward broke his duck for the Lancashire club as they beat relegated Bolton 2-0 on Monday.

It was only the 20-year-old’s fifth Championship start for Rovers, with Brereton otherwise having made 19 appearances off the bench, in a season when he has often struggled to fulfil the potential he was regarded as having during his time at the City Ground.

But, having finally found the back of the net, with an assured first half finish after being set up by Bradley Dack, the Nigel Doughty Academy product hopes to see his confidence levels flourish.

“I needed that for myself and my confidence. It was brilliant. It was great to get my first goal and a great team performance,” former Reds man Brereton told the Lancashire Telegraph.

Middlesbrough can still win a play-off spot ahead of Derby, says Nottingham Forest boss

“It was on my weak foot but it’s something I’ve been working on in training and it’s becoming habit. I think I should have had two or three but let’s not be greedy!

“I have been working hard in training, but knew I needed to take that out on the pitch and show people what I can do. I felt I did well.”

Rovers have recently ended a poor run of form by notching up four consecutive wins, including a recent 2-1 success at the City Ground.

Martin O'Neill explains why Jack Robinson was handed Nottingham Forest captaincy - and why he has faith in defender

“We went through a bumpy run halfway through but we’re back on track and all the lads have stuck together,” said Brereton. “Coming up from League One and pushing for that top 10 would be key for us.

“To climb up the table you have to put those wins together. The season is up and down for most teams but finding that consistency and the wins will move you up.

“We have stuck together as a team and have these last four games have shown what a good team we can be.

“We will look to take that in to the end of the season, have a good rest and comeback for pre-season.”
