Ben Bradley MP elected leader of Nottinghamshire County Council

Mansfield MP Ben Bradley has been elected as the new leader of Nottinghamshire County Council.

Mr Bradley, who was elected as Mansfield North councillor last week, will lead the council after being voted as the new leader on Monday (May 10).

The party held its virtual AGM at 10am, with members voting on candidates to lead the authority in its policy direction for the new term.

And now Nottinghamshire County Council has confirmed in a Tweet that the Mansfield MP has been elected in the role.

The MP previously told Nottinghamshire Live he had "not considered" taking up the position.

It follows the Tories' victory in the county council elections last week, which saw the party pick up 37 of the 66 available seats.

The election saw the party make big gains in areas like Mansfield, where it won six seats from a starting point of zero.

Other areas to turn blue included in Bassetlaw district, where the vote share swung 15.2 percent in favour of the Conservatives.

Overall, the Tories gained 42.4 percent of the county-wide vote, swinging 4.3 percent in its favour compared to 2017.

Mansfield MP Ben Bradley takes on the role following the departure of former leader Kay Cutts MBE, who sat on the council for more than 32 years.

She announced last year that she would not be seeking re-election, with the Conservatives going into last week's election without a leader.

More to follow.
