Bemused pedestrians watch on as motorists attempts to drive with clamp on in Dublin city centre

Bemused pedestrians watched on as a motorist made a vain attempt to drive away apparently unaware there was a clamp on his vehicle.

Footage has emerged showing the driver in the city centre try and pull away before appearing to give up quickly and go back into the spot.

The man manages to get the 4x4 onto the road, while smoke can be seen piling out from under.

He eventually reverses back into the spot.

The clip was taken on Forbes Street close to the busy Grand Canal area.

Figures published by Dublin City Council show the overall number of vehicles clamped in the city in 2019 rose by almost 8% with an average of 127 offending motorists getting caught each day.

Mespil Road, which is located along the Grand Canal between the bridges at Baggot Street and Leeson Street, had consistently been the most likely location to be clamped for many years before being overtaken by the South Circular Road in 2018.

However, a 19% increase in the number of vehicles detected as being parked illegally on Mespil Road last year has seen it back again in top position as a clamping blackspot.
