Bemused All Blacks coach Steve Hansen wakes up to discover Wales are number one in the world and can't quite believe it

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen is completely bemused by the fact Wales are now the number one team in the world.

Hansen awoke on Sunday morning to discover his side had been overtaken at the top of the official world rankings, despite the All Blacks destroying Australia 36-0 on Saturday to win the Bledisloe Cup.

Wales' 13-6 victory over England means they just squeezed past the All Blacks as they gained more ranking points for beating an England team who were higher in the rankings than the Wallabies.

It's the first time in a decade New Zealand will not be number one when the rankings are released on Monday morning, and Hansen seemed somewhat confused at a press conference on Sunday.

The moment Gatland addresses JJ Williams' comments

"How do you work that out?" he asked. "We won the Bledisloe Cup last night and lost the rankings. Ask yourself how that works.

"I've never understood their system. You win a game and you lose the top ranking?

"When you sit back, it's something that's going to happen anyway – the top-ranked sides are playing each other in the northern hemisphere, and you get more points if you beat top sides.

"We just need to get ourselves in the right frame of mind to go to the World Cup and win that. I'm not too worried about rankings."

And he took the opportunity, much like Eddie Jones has done in the wake of Wales' rise, to pile a bit of pressure on Warren Gatland's men.

"They've been great, no problem. Now they've got the expectation," he added. "They're the No 1 team in the world taking it into the World Cup. It couldn't be better timing."

Gatland himself seemed pretty unmoved by the rankings issue, saying: "There will be lots of journalists saying it’s a joke, probably Kiwi journalists!

"It’s just a number, that’s all it is at the moment. We won’t be making a big fuss about it.

"We’ll just keep it in our pocket and go from week to week."
