Belvidere Bowling Green in Parkhead earmarked for 24 new flats

A bowling green in the east end has been earmarked as the site of 24 new flats.

Surplus land at Belvidere Bowling Green on Silverdale Street is being lined up for a residential development.

SIM Building Group have applied for permission to build the flats for Parkhead Housing Association.

The four-storey building with one and two bedroom flats would look onto London Road.

Belvidere Bowling Green has experienced a drop in membership and currently only uses one of its two greens.

Documents submitted with plans say that developing the land would safeguard the future of the club, which was established in 1861.

It reads: "In order to safeguard the future of the club, they decided to offer the unused bowling green for sale in order to raise funds.

“The development of the front, London Road-facing green therefore is of vital importance in order to protect a century-old institution.”

As the site sits in a gap between four-storey residential buildings, developers say it would "suitably infill" the street frontage.

The plans are due to go before Glasgow City Council.
