Belshill domestic abuser convicted for harassing former partner from jail

A Belshill man has been sentenced to a three-year custodial sentence for repeatedly breaching a non-harassment order against his former partner.

Thomas McTavish phoned and wrote to his victim continually between November 2016 and August 2018.

The last instance of which, he did from jail, where he was serving for domestic abuse related offences.

The 46-year-old had also previously been issued with a five-year non-harassment order, which was still active.

Police Scotland welcomed the news of his sentencing at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

Detective Inspector Gary Irving, from the Lanarkshire Domestic Abuse Investigation, said: "McTavish was sentenced for a number of domestic abuse related offences in November 2011 and a 5 year Non-Harassment Order was imposed in order to protect his ex-partner.

"He broke the terms of this order by repeatedly contacting his ex-partner by telephone and letter, turning up at her home which understandably caused her significant fear and alarm.

"His conviction and sentence gives a clear message that domestic abuse will not be tolerated and we hope it will encourage other victims of abuse to come forward to police where they will be listened to and any report thoroughly investigated."
