Liverpool greats Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness hit back at Paul Pogba after Manchester United midfielder's jibes

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has leapt to the defence of former Reds player and manager Graeme Souness after Paul Pogba hit back at the Sky Sports tv pundit.

Souness has been one of the Manchester United star's most vocal critics since his return to Old Trafford in 2016 from Juventus, having plenty to say about the Frenchman's transfer fee, lifestyle, social media and even hairstyles.

Pogba had kept his counsel for some time but, speaking on the UTD podcast, said he did not even know who Souness was.

"I didn’t even know who [Souness] was," Pogba said.

"I heard he was a great player and stuff like that. I don't know the face but the name [I do].

"Like I said I’m not someone that watches a lot of [punditry], I watch a lot of football but I don’t stay after the game to listen to what they say about ‘Why they did this’ or ‘why they did that’. I like to focus on football."

Appearing on Sky Sports' new morning Football Show alongside Souness, Carragher broached the subject of Pogba's comments by saying, with a broad smile on his face, they were 'below the belt'.

Souness also gave his own reaction, saying he was 'happy' to hear what Pogba had said.

"I am happy with that", he replied.

"The oldest saying in football comes to mind, put your medals on the table."
