A beloved therapy dog died after falling 150ft into a quarry.

Findlay, was walking in the Tilberthwaite Valley, Cumbria when he fell.

The three-year-old was with a man when rescuers arrived arrived in the area on Sunday morning.

His companion had been climbing in the quarry when the dog fell.

The dog had helped children and adults with his "calm and friendly nature", Coniston Mountain Rescue Team said.

The rescue team tried to resuscitate Findlay, who was lifted to the entrance of a water-logged tunnel to allow him to be taken out.

Eleven volunteers attended the the scene as part of operation which lasted nearly three hours

Findlay was described as 'a much loved and happy boy who had a 'big heart' (Coniston Mountain Rescue Team)

Findlay, a Golden Retriever, was loved by everyone who he worked with and was described as "a much loved and happy boy" who had a "big heart."

A spokesperson for the team said: "It was a cloudy and showery morning when we were called by Cumbria Police about a dog that had fallen approximately 45m into the main quarry at Hodge Close.

"We despatched two Land Rovers and soon located the dog, Findlay. A gentleman who was climbing in the quarry was with him.

"Sadly, after administering CPR, Findlay could not be resuscitated.

"We put him on to our stretcher and a rope lift system was used to get the stretcher up to the entrance of a water-logged tunnel where we could walk out.

"Beautiful Findlay was nearly three years old.

"He was a much loved and happy boy, who was also a therapy dog, helping children and adults with his calm and friendly nature, and big heart.

"Our thoughts are with his owners, as well as his extended family."

A dog also fell to its death after chasing a sheep over a quarry edge in the area.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team were called by Cumbria Police to Brandy Crag quarry shortly after 4.30pm on Monday after a three-year-old Rottweiler dog named Marnie needed rescuing.

The large dog had 'in her exuberance' pulled her head out of her owner's hand and followed a sheep which ran over the edge of the quarry.

Rescuers said the dog 'fell quite a distance and sustained fatal injuries'.
