Beloved Sydney institution Chinese Noodle House has tragically announced that it is closing up shop after a landlord’s “unilateral decision” not to renew its lease.
The restaurant, nestled in the heart of Chinatown in Haymarket, announced the closure in an Instagram Post earlier this week, confirming it will shutter in December.
In a message that has me tearful both for the business and for the loss of their truly delectable dumplings, Chinese Noodle House wrote, “Due to the landlord’s unilateral decision not to renew our lease, we are sadly forced to leave”.
“It has been our honour and pleasure to serve you, and we are deeply grateful for your companionship along the way,” the restaurant added.
Is it possible to cry and salivate at the same time?
Elsewhere in the post, the business expressed “sincere gratitude” to its customers throughout the years, and said it hopes to “have the opportunity to bring you delicious food and quality service” sometime in the near future.
For many patrons, that future can’t come soon enough. Hundreds of heartbroken Sydneysiders flocked to the comments to commiserate with noodle-less stomachs.
“Wherever you go, we shall follow,” one Instagram user wrote, while another offered a poignant, “what’s the point of anything?”. Others demanded to “send us the landlord’s info”, or described the news as a “catastrophe”.
Thankfully, Chinese Noodle House revealed it is scouting a new location for its culinary wizardry, saying in the comments that it will “update the address once we find one”.
First opening its doors in the early 1990s, Chinese Noodle House was one of Sydney’s first Northern-style Chinese restaurants.
