'Beloved' Beaumont Street cafe to close its doors after 20 years

A popular Islington cafe described as a "beloved institution" is closing its doors at the end of the month.

Slingtown Espresso opened 20 years ago as Suspension Espresso, and was affectionately known as "Spennos".

Owners Chris Johnston and Steph Whitehead said on social media their landlords had decided not to renew the cafe's lease at 3 Beaumont Street.

The cafe will close, for good, on August 23.

"From day one, the space possessed its own innate magic, which we tried to honour and nurture by being responsible custodians," the pair said.

"Over the years, you, the cherished community, grew the cafe into a beloved institution. We've hosted your fundraisers, wakes, birthday parties, gigs, movie screenings and even a wedding, not to mention the countless art exhibitions that have graced our grungy walls.

"We have watched many of your children grow along with our own (and have even hired some of them!).

"We know that our closure will be felt very deeply by some of you, but we hope that you will join us in remembering and celebrating all the good times."

Slingtown Espresso's community roots ran deep. It donated thousands of coffees to people in need over the years and acted as a headquarters for Reach Homeless Services while stocking breakfast packs for the homeless.

It was a venue people used to connect with others. Friendships were formed at its tables, board games played, theses written, and stories swapped.

The good news is, Slingtown Espresso's generosity of spirit and sense of community lives on at Johnston and Whitehead's other cafes, Good Brother Espresso in Newcastle East and The Pavilion in Carrington.
