  • Children's author Michael Rosen has urged the public to thoroughly check for meningitis rashes, including in less obvious areas like armpits and groins, following a recent outbreak in Kent.
  • Rosen's son, Eddie, tragically died from meningitis in 1999 at age 18, with the rash only appearing in his armpits, highlighting how quickly the disease can progress and the importance of comprehensive checks.
  • He emphasised the effectiveness of the glass test, where a rash that does not fade when pressed with a tumbler indicates an immediate need to call 999.
  • The UK Health Security Agency is investigating 20 cases in Kent, leading to GPs being instructed to prescribe antibiotics to individuals who visited a Canterbury nightclub or are University of Kent students between 5-7 March.
