Belmont man charged after allegedly threatening police minister

A man has been charged after he was arrested at Lake Macquarie for allegedly making online threats against the state's police minister David Elliott.

Detectives from the Fixated Persons Investigation Unit began inquiries on Sunday after reports that a 49-year-old man had received threatening messages.

Investigators searched a Belmont home about 3.30pm on Monday, where they allegedly seized cannabis, medications without prescriptions, two gel blasters and ammunition.

The items will be forensically examined.

Police arrested a 25-year-old man and took him to Belmont Police Station where he was charged with use carriage service to threaten to kill, possess prohibited drug, possess prescribed restricted substance, possess unauthorised firearm and possess unauthorised prohibited firearm.

The man was granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear at Belmont Local Court on July 20.
