Bellshill West of Scotland League start joy amid rebuild plans

Bellshill boss Derek Wilson is happy to start the West of Scotland League season as it gives him the chance to assess his rebuilding job.

Having taken charge at Rockburn Park in the summer, Wilson has had plenty of time to put his players through their paces.

Now they are set to kick-off the season at home to Renfrew on Saturday in Conference A and it arrives after the WOSL underwent a hasty re-jig.

A host of clubs pulled out of the setup in the last week due to there being no promotion or relegation for the inaugural campaign, but Bellshill are one of the sides to stay on.

Wilson said: “We are happy to go ahead.

“We had said that we would go ahead at the start so there is no point in us pulling out now.

“We spoke to all the players and they just want to get back to playing football.

“We are one of the teams that don’t pay any wages so the boys are just looking for a game of football.

“We’ve not got a problem with how things have gone with the leagues, but we will wait to see how things pan out.

“If it’s friendlies until next season then that gives us time. We are rebuilding the team down at Bellshill anyway so it gives us that chance to look at the squad.

“Three teams pulled out of our league so we just want to get things started now.”
