Bellshill biotech firm Andersen Caledonia has launched a surface test service which can detect Covid-19.
The company says its new offering is the UK's first of its kind and could help firms and organisations reassure staff and customers that shared areas are free of the virus. It could also get healthcare facilities, public transport, care homes and shops closer to normal operations.
Managing director Jonathan Lintott said: "This is a test that helps the public take back control of their lives. This innovation is significant as it assures users that a public space is clear of any infection.
"The test works by looking for the RNA of corona virus in very small quantities left on surfaces.
"Moreover, identifying where virus particles accumulate in shared spaces means businesses can target cleaning, in turn saving time and money in the eradication of the presence of virus to their site.
"As the economic impact of life with Covid-19 continues to rise, the test provides a vital tool to end lockdown and preventing a second wave."
Andersen Caledonia, which was founded more than 20 years ago, provides specialist steam sterilisation, microbiological testing and sterile packing services which are used by medical facilities and labs across the UK and Ireland. It is also providing full face visors for protection against infection.
