Jude Bellingham scored twice on Saturday afternoon as England came from behind to beat Norway 2-1 and advance to the World Cup semi-finals for the second time in three tournaments. On Wednesday in Atlanta, they will play the defending champions Argentina who beat Switzerland 3-1 on Saturday night.
England and Norway started their quarter-final brightly at the Miami Stadium but it was England who dominated possession without creating clear chances.
And for all the pre-match talk about star strikers Harry Kane and Erling Haaland, it was one of Norway's unsung heroes who opened the scoring.
Patrick Berg tackled Kane and while England appealed for a foul on their skipper, the ball was moved on to Andreas Schjelderup who advanced down the left and unleashed a shot that swerved over the England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford into the top right hand corner of his goal.
Norway squander chance to double lead
Norway could have made it 2-0 as England reeled. Alexander Sorloth raced down the right but dallied over the pass to set Haaland clear on goal.
He and Norway paid the price for his indecision.
In first-half stoppage time, Anthony Gordon slid the ball across the Norway penalty area into the path of Bellingham who muscled his way past Torbjorn Heggem and powered the ball across the Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland into the net to level the match at 1-1.
Norway thought they had retaken the lead in the 57th minute when Heggem stabbed the ball into the net after a corner kick but the goal was disallowed for a Haaland push on Elliot Anderson.
The setback spurred Norway rather than spiking England. A Molle Wolfe header hit the bar and six minutes from time Antonio Nusa pinged a shot at goal that Pickford collected unfussily.
Three minutes from time, substitute Bukayo Saka wriggled into the box and centred but Fredrik Aursnes hacked the ball away for a corner as Eberechi Eze hovered to tap it into the net.
England pressure counts
As the game moved into stoppage time, Norway were pinned back in England's hunt for the winner.
It didn't come. But Thomas Tuchel's men started extra-time with more pep and purpose.
Three minutes into the first half of the additional 30 minutes, substitute Morgan Rogers thrashed a shot at goal that Nyland spilled and Bellingham slid in between Berg and Leo Ostigard to give his side a 2-1 lead.
Norway survived further pain six minutes later. Referee Clément Turpin awarded a penalty when Djed Spence went down in the Norway penalty area in a tussle with Oscar Bobb. But after checking with the video assistant referees, Turpin overturned his decision.
But the Norwegians failed to exploit the reprieve. England scurried and scampered akin to their 10-man rebuff of Mexico in the last-16.
But this time, they had the extra man. And Bellingham.
