Vulnerable adults living in an east end hotel will be transferred to a permanent and supported living situation by the end of this month.
The Bellgrove Hotel has, for years, caused concern for the welfare of the dozens of men who live there at any one time.
On April 1 2021, the Wheatley Group acquired the Bellgrove Hotel with staff from Wheatley Care providing care and support to the residents.
Glasgow City Council is now looking to transfer as many people as possible living in hotels to accommodation let by registered social landlords which is part of their rapid rehousing programme.
An update was brought before the scrutiny committee this week.
A council officer said: “The report shows that there were increased presentations in terms of homelessness during the pandemic from 150 a week to 245 currently which generated 13,000 requests for accommodation.
“We are going to extradite plans to move people from hotels to more permanent lets.
“We did use hotel accommodation pre-covid but this is about moving away from that type of accommodation to completely illuminating it from our plans.
“The report demonstrates our ongoing commitment to housing first and addressing the needs of our most complex service users.
“We have also taken the opportunity to close the Bellgrove which housed 56 men with various men with complex needs.
“We are now looking to transfer them into different accommodation by the end of the month which in its own right would be ambitious but given the impact of covid, I feel like it really demonstrates the commitment from the workforce to ensure people become more supported in permanent accommodation.”
A joint plan has been developed with the Wheatley Group and the Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) to decommission the east end hotel and ensure that all residents secure accommodation and support appropriate to their needs.
The HSCP has identified staffing leads and governance arrangements for the delivery of programme. During the committee meeting councillors agreed the proposals. Updates will be presented in due course.
