Bellator 267: Leah McCourt feeling strong 'in body and mind' ahead of Jessica Borga clash

By Gareth Fullerton

Leah McCourt says she is feeling strong 'in body and mind' ahead of next month's showdown with Jessica Borga.

The Saintfield fighter will take on Borga as co-main event at Bellator 267 in London on October 1.

It is the latest acid test for McCourt who will be looking to extend an impressive five-fight winning streak dating back to June 2018.

McCourt is used to travelling between Belfast and Dublin for her training camps, often making the trip to SBG Charlestown gym four days a week to prepare for her fights.

This time she is staying closer to home, a move the 29-year-old believes will benefit her when she enters the cage on October 1.

"Camp is going great, I’m feeling in great condition, my body is feeling good and my head is feeling good," McCourt told Belfast Live.

"I’m just really looking forward to going out and performing in London.

"My week is a kind of a mixture between training with my grapple coach and training in Belfast. I’m training in Belfast for this camp, so I’m getting a lot more hours of mat time, and I’m excited to put on a performance.

"I’m getting more training in with my head grappling coach and spending a lot more time on the mat, rather than driving which I am finding is benefitting me a lot more in my sparring, my conditioning and my mental and physical health."

McCourt earned a spectacular win over Janay Harding last time out at Bellator 259.

Rocked in the second round, she pulled off a sensational victory, landed an upkick on her opponent before ending proceedings with a triangle choke.

It was an spontaneous moment of magic from McCourt, who credits the resilient win to the graft she puts in during camp.

"The rounds I do in the gym prepare me for anything," she added.

"You’re never going to win every single second of the fight, you can try to but you are going to put in difficult positions and different situations.

"I feel if you get clipped once, you can get caught off guard for a minute or two and that’s what happened to me, but I was able to maintain composure and find calm in the chaos and get that finish."

Tickets for the event are on sale now and can be purchased online from axs.com/uk and BELLATOR.com.
