Bellator 228: Daniel Weichel’s motivation? Legacy first, $1 million prize second

LOS ANGELES – The $1 million earnings for the winner of the Bellator featherweight grand pix is all good and fun for Daniel Weichel, but the legacy that comes along with tournament victory is priceless.

On the main card of Bellator 228, Weichel (39-11 MMA, 8-3 BMMA) battles Saul Rogers (13-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) in the opening round of the bracket. The event takes place Saturday at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. The main card streams on DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie.

If Weichel walks away victorious at the end of the 145-pound grand prix, it won’t be his first time. When former Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney was still in charge, Weichel defeated all on-comers en route to a featherweight tournament title in 2014.

Not only will Weichel seek advancement to the second round of the 2019 tournament, he’ll also look to snap a two-fight losing skid. After winning 11 out of 12 bouts, Weichel dropped back-to-back fights to Goiti Yamauchi and Bellator double champ Patricio Freire in 2018.

In the video above, check out what Weichel had to say about Rogers, what he would do with the prize money and his mindset entering the grand prix.
