Bella Italia stops all deliveries as chain on brink of administration

Bella Italia has halted deliveries from all its restaurants as it faces administration.

The chain has furloughed all staff at its restaurants, including those in Bristol's Baldwin Street, Cabot Circus, Cribbs Causeway and Abbeywood Retail Park.

It comes after Bella Italia owner, Casual Dining Group, filed intent to appoint administrators at the High Court on May 18, putting 6,000 jobs at risk.

A Bella Italia spokesman told Bristol Live yesterday (May 27): "Baldwin Street was one of the sites we kept open for delivery only, during lockdown.

"The decision was taken to temporarily close all of Bella Italia delivery sites, including Baldwin Street, today to allow it to focus on the restructure.

"All team members have been furloughed and no redundancies have taken place."

We have asked Bella Italia how many jobs are at risk in Bristol and if there is an expected timescale for reopening.

Casual Dining Group, which also owns Cafe Rouge and Las Iguanas, said on May 18 it had filed intent to appoint administrators because this would allow 10 days to consider "all options" for restructuring.

We have asked for an update on the potential administration of the chain, which has been hit hard by the coronavirus lockdown.

The firm has been working with advisers from corporate finance firm AlixPartners over the potential restructuring.

A Casual Dining Group spokeswoman said on May 18: "As is widely acknowledged, this is an unprecedented situation for our industry and, like many other companies across the UK, the directors of Casual Dining Group are working closely with our advisers as we consider our next steps.

"These notifications are a prudent measure in light of the company's position and the wider situation."

Last month Alliance House, which houses Baldwin Street's Bella Italia, was sold for an undisclosed sum to Acorn Property Group, which has an office in Clifton.

The five-storey Victorian building is home to Bella Italia and other businesses on the ground floor, with empty offices above.

Acorn is planning to convert the property into 44 flats while keeping the ground floor and basement as retail space.
